EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

Mainstream Program By definition, students with a true Learning Difference are strong or even gifted in some areas but have deficits in others.  They will not need accomidations in all areas.  Reading and Math are very intensive, structured, and taught with a low teacher to student ratio (1:5).  Students work at their own level in these subjects whether they are functioning below or above grade level.  Teachers use multi sensory hands on methods.  Our various curricula are research tested and highly recommended for students with LDs.  Reading is taught through various programs designed for LD students. All programs use a multi-sensory, systematic approach to phonemic instruction, spelling, and reading comprehension.  Handwriting is taught with Handwriting without Tears, a curriculum developed by an Occupational Therapist.  Students learn math through hands on techniques and through various curricula such as Drops in the Bucket, MathUSee, and SRA Spectrum. Science and Social Studies are taught in the afternoons through the Classical Education Program in six-week blocks.  This program is project-based and allows students to integrate knowledge in all subjects as it fosters discovery learning and logic.  Fine arts are incorporated into Science and Social Studies and are developed further on Fine Arts Fridays.  Teachers will work with students to map out an appropriate, feasible learning plan for each unit.  Students will learn to plan, organize and carry out projects.  At the end ofone science and one social studies unit, students will present a “museum” to the parents encompassing all they learned.

ESL Students (Mainstream Program) ESL students may choose to transition into another school or graduate from Brookwood Christian.  Transitional students are given the opportunity to learn to speak, read, and write English before enrolling in a traditional school.  At least two years is recommended.  ESL students learn to read English with the Wilson Reading System and Pearson Longman ESL materials.

Homeschool Students (Mainstream Program) Homeschoolers may enroll part time to participate in any subject area including the classical education program.  Homeschoolers may also choose to attend Friday classes geared toward fine arts, field trips and fitness.  Individual pricing is available.

Developmental Delays Program This program is appropriate for high functioning students (average to slightly below average IQ’s) who have been diagnosed with Autism, Aspergers, Fetal Alcohol, and Down Syndrome.  The curriculum is academic in nature.  Students take classes with mainstream students when possible.  Students must be reading or reading ready, non-aggressive, verbal, and toilet trained.  Classes are small and highly structured.
